Doing Good. Last night Susan and I became members of the West Springfield Environmental Committee. Our main focus is promoting responsible management and the protection of the 1,700 acre Bear Hole Watershed. We also focus on Mittineague Park and recycling issues.

Here are some photos of mine of Mittineague Park:

Garden Design. The unexpected, but welcomed, warm weather of earlier in the week turned raw and rainy today. It was, however, a good day to start thinking about our garden. Planning where to put the tomato plants, the basil, sunflowers, cosmos and much more; all situated near the birdbath and wheelbarrow.

Meanwhile, some of the images from my book, "Famous People Famous Places," picked up by Lifelounge. Publication date; Autumn 2010. Honored that Luc Sante wrote the introduction and very touched by his words.

In The Studio. Hannah came by train from Brooklyn to my studio in Eastworks for an afternoon of photography. We worked both in the studio and in a park. This photo, now four or five years old, is a favorite portrait.  I don't remember how she

found me, nor I her. I was at the time still in the early stages of learning all about studio lighting; self-taught. I think the harsh lighting works in this image. And here is an image in natural light:

The Tulip. After dinner Susan and I sat on the back steps. The chairs still in storage in the garage. I imagined, I said to Susan, a new garden, rectangular in shape, running from near the house, out toward the birdbath. It would be, I imagined, four feet wide and fifteen feet long. Big enough for tomato plants and flowers.

At The Table. I found a great cookbook today in the library, The New Portuguese Table. It is chockfull of wonderful recipes. I made the Red Pepper and Paprika Roast Chicken for today's dinner (pictured below) and it was superb!

I also found a wonderful new poetry book, In Such Hard Times; The Poetry of Wei Ying-wu.

For Li Tan

Silk and paulownia are worlds apart
but their sounds combine so well
I can hear the meaning of creation
the connections between two things
in their resonance I mistake phoenixes and dragons
in their stillness a winter night stream
my mind and spirit feel at peace
cares and troubles are suddenly dispelled
what is it that calls old promises to mind
the purity of silk and durability of lacquer

The poems of Wei Ying-wu call to mind the poetry of Gary Snyder and Mary Oliver, two of my favorite poets.

The Easter Egg. Yesterday, Easter Sunday, we were not on an Easter Egg Hunt, but we found an egg in a bag of clothespins that hung from a hook on the back of Eleanor's house. I think it belongs to a House Sparrow or White Breasted Nuthatch.

Easter Sunday. I am letting my heart shine like the sun, radiating love, expressing my true nature of creativity and wisdom. I am letting my spirit soar, taking me to new heights of awareness, to new understandings and new perceptions of myself and the world around me; free and prosperous.

40th Day of Lent. I am growing and developing spiritually, from moment to moment, day to day, I am transformed; setting aside time for prayer and meditation--growth is a lifelong endeavor.

Self Portrait, 2002

Susan and I went out to dinner last night. We had a great time as we do not often go out for dinner. We went to a well-respected restaurant. We first sat at the bar and had a drink and then moved to a booth in the bar area. Dinner was good

but not great. We had a bottle of wine, appetizers and a main course. If it was not for our Christmas Gift Card, it would have been rather expensive. Sitting in the booth gave us some privacy but the acoustics were poor--in fact, it was sometimes uncomfortably loud. And frankly, the main courses simply do not compare with my cooking. Meals such as:

  1. Baked Cod With Spicy Garlic Olive Oil
  2. Baked Salmon Cakes
  3. Baked Sockeye Salmon with Capers
  4. Baked Cod and Golden Onions
  5. Chicken Breasts with Green Olives
  6. Curry Coconut Quinoa Salmon Cakes
  7. Fred's Turkey Burger
  8. Quinoa Cod Cakes
  9. Sweet Pea Crostini
  10. Thai Chunky Peanut Butter Chicken
  11. Tortellini with Carrot Leek Sauce
  12. Turkey Date Meatballs
  13. Chicken Spinach Soup with Pesto

Mother's Bible. I started reading the Bible today; not at the beginning, although in the beginning was the word, but I started at Matthew to better understand the crucifixion story. The Bible I am reading was my mother's Bible. I sat outside and I

read in the early afternoon sun:

The Genealogy of Jesus

1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
